David Robbins

A Message to Fathers in 2020
Bob: And she’ll go: “I think, here and there, you could have maybe said this better,” and “I had a question about this,” and “You maybe went too long here.” And then she’ll wrap it all up and say, “But it was good!”
Okay, now I’ve lived with her long enough to know that she really does—
Shaunti: —she means that! Yes, she does mean that; yes.
Bob: —she does think it’s good. And I have lived with her long enough to know that that constructive criticism is helpful; it’s helped sharpen me.
But I’ll tell you what—early on, that would have just/I’d have been in bed for the rest of the day! [Laughter]

Michelle: Oh, ladies! What a great reminder that our words have power to really affirm and build up the guy in our life or to tear him down, just as Bob was talking about, with constructive criticism. But it doesn’t just go one way; it’s for men and women—those words are powerful! There is a lot of power in our tongues.
Speaking of power in the tongue, FamilyLife president, David Robbins, spoke with me recently about his dad’s legacy. He also gave a charge of encouragement to all dads.

David: Do everything we can to have an active, present walk with Jesus that spills out of us. One of the greatest gifts we can give is to stop playing any religious games we’re playing; to own up to however we’re encountering Him.
There are seasons, where we just persevere—and it’s a hard season; yet, even in those—how are we showing our kids: “This is hard! Let’s get on our knees”?
“I don’t experience an encounter with Jesus as this intimate, you know, right-here-with-me God; but yet I know He’s personal,”—so let’s keep pursuing Him. Whatever season we’re at, let’s bring our kids in on it, and let them watch us pursue God, and let us pursue Him really/authentically.
How are we being intentional?—rejecting passivity, embracing responsibility, and being intentional. If we don’t create spaces in our home, intentionally, how can we be the leaders in the home to create the intentional space for us to encounter intimacy with the covenant relationships that exist inside our four walls and experience intimacy with the God of the universe?
Easier said than done; I’m not saying it’s easy. Get honest with wherever you are, but let’s get honest! Let’s have an active faith that’s contagious. Let’s do whatever we can to posture ourselves to get it, and then let’s create intentional spaces.

Dad, I hope that you’ve heard our heart today—we love you. We love you for all that you are. We love you for your super powers that make you seem bigger than life. We love you for how your brain works, and how you keep everything rolling from day to day, and how you protect us. We also love you for when you admit you’re wrong and you ask us for forgiveness. Thank you! Thank you for leaving a legacy. Thank you for walking hard steps. We appreciate all that you do for us, here on Father’s Day.
